Explanation:

Here are some things to know about the passé composé:

The passé composé sentence structure is as follows:

Pronoun + conjugated auxiliary verb + past participle + rest of sentence

  • The auxiliary verb will either be avoir or être, depending on which verb you are using in the past tense and must be conjugated to match the pronoun
  • The past participle is the past tense form of the verb

Auxiliary Verbs:

Just a reminder of the conjugation of avoir and être:

  • être: je suis, tu es, il/elle est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils/elles sont
  • avoir: j'ai, tu as, il/elle a, nous avons, vous avez, ils/elles ont

Most verbs fall under the house of avoir, but these fall under the house of être:

  • any reflexive verb
  • verbs in the phrase Dr. and Mrs. Vandertrampp (also, they all have to do with movement, whether actually moving, or moving through stages in lefe)

              Devenir

              Revenir

              Mourir

              Retourner

              Sortir

              Venir

              Arriver

              Naître

              Descendre

              Entrer

              Rentrer

              Tomber

              Rester

              Aller

              Monter

              Partir

              Passer

  • Also, in the house of être, treat the past participle as an adjective, meaning if the subject is feminine, add an e, and if the subject is plural, add an s.

How to create past participles:

  • If an -er verb, take off the -er and add -é
  • If an -ir verb, take off the -ir and add -i
  • If an -re verb, take off the -re and add -u

But not all verbs are regular: here are some common irregular verbs:

  • être -> été
  • avoir -> eu
  • prendre -> pris
  • faire -> fait
  • dire -> dit
  • boire -> bu
  • lire -> lu
  • voir -> vu
  • connaître -> conne
  • recevoir -> reçu
  • vouloir -> voulu
  • couvrire -> couvert
  • écrire -> écrit
  • conduire -> conduit
  • mettre -> mis

Hope this helps :)

If there is anything I missed here let me know and I can explain it.
