The Crusaders were mainly from france but also came from Britain and the German states. Pope Urban II called for a "holy war" in 1097 to save Jerusalem from the Muslims. The Emperor there, Alexius Conmenus, called for help, and the Crusaders arrived to battle the Muslims for their holy city.
