The animator, Windsor McCay use "heavy lines" to define a character from all other drawing pieces whether it was background or other characters. (he just outlined his stuff with a thick, black pen)
Polymer clay is always my go to! I like that you can use a bunch of different colors and get it exactly perfect. I've also made a cake and used various icing and candies to represent parts that I needed. Have fun getting creative!
