The fact that protein-based hormones are hydrophilic means that they:___________

Biology

Answer: The answer is that have to bind to receptors to cross the membrane.

Explanation:

A hydrophilic substance can easily dissolve or absorbed in a water containing vessel, not a fat or lipid vessel like biological membranes.

Now, protein-based hormones like dopamine or serotonin ARE NOT LIPID-SOLUBLE; so, have to bind to receptors positioned in the membrane and MAY also require energy in form of ATP for across the membrane before they would exert their function on the target cell or organelles.

Prokaryotes have magnetite-containing structures, nucleoid (their version of a nucleus), fimbriae. Animals have lysosomes. Plant cells have chloroplasts (make the plant cells green, produce energy for plants), photosynthetic membranes (produce energy for plants), cell well. Flagella can be found in prokaryotes and animal cells but for a simpler biology class, I would put it with prokaryotes.

Imagine that a mutation in DNA produces a protein with a slightly different amino acid sequence. how would this mutation affect
Lynna [10]

Answer:

It would most likely render the protein nonfunctional or mis-functional.

The mutation could result in three outcomes:

 1. Silent mutation, which changes the codon to the same amino acid. (AAA->AAG, both are lysine). But since the problem specified that it has a "slightly different amino acid sequence," we can assume this doesn't happen.
 2. Nonsense mutation, which changes a codon to a stop codon. This would end the chain of amino acids, making the protein potentially nonfunctional.
 3. Missense mutation, which changes a codon to another completely different codon. This can be harmful, as in sickle-cell disease, where just one amino acid, glutamic acid, is changed to valine.
