"The Lottery"
Phoenix [80]
1) When the townspeople give Davy Hutchinson pebbles to join in the ritual, this significant of perpetuating religious prejudice and blind acceptance of tradition. I choose the last option because Davy was the youngest in his family and his mind was'nt prepared for such things as form of this lottery. The story will show all the cruelty and pointlessness of the tradition when this little boy that joined this event occassion will not be an exempt from it.

2) The way how transporting does the primitivistic act of violence into a modern setting function in the story is being shown there : It functions to reveal something about human nature and human society. When reading this story you always come across particular situations of people's daily lives that exposes all the reality of human nature and show how people can turn into savages in order to get what they want. "The Lottery" rises social questions that might appear in community.

3) The story is told from third person omniscient. The main characterics of point of view is that author does not represent the inner thoughts or intentions of a characther but describes the actions in the way that the reader will make a conclusion and image of each charachter.
4) The scapegoat in this story Mr. Graves. The scapegoat is a person that commited loads of sins and should be punished in the end of the story. Mr. Gvaes that is also called Old Man is main person that connected with all the negative aspects of lotteries but nobody seemed to know about it.

5) The character which represents an attitude of liberalism is definitely Mr. Summers. All the members of Summers family are form the idea of liberty and progress. He tries to give this lottery a new look and shape and to make it less cruel.

6) I think that the character whose latent cruelty most clearly manifest itself is Old Man Warner. The reason why I think so is mentioned in the fourth answer that reveals the truth about this character.

7) The theme of this story might be that : accepting tradition is harmful. I would even say that preserving such traditions is harmful. In this story you can see how the tradition which wasn't removed or improved by the years affect modern society and gives a particular impact on community and people's lives.

8) Without any doubts I can say that the best options which directly shows the irony is :The discrepancy between the good will of the community and the cruelty of the ritual they thoughtlessly perpetuate. I am so sure because at the beginning of the story it is said that every member of community cares about one another but the fact that they still appreciate such a cruel tradition shows that their actual attitude is just the opposite.

9) The thing which Jackson must be satirizing hazing. According to the year of release of the book and the setting of the story, the main cultural institution of ''The Lottery'' is military draft that directly lead us to ''hazing'' as this is the only option which clearly coincides.

Do hope you find it helpful!
