. How does this affect the text? Dr. Watson takes credit for doing the most of the work to solve the mystery. Readers do not learn of the true identity of Spaulding until the end of the story. Dr. Watson shares with readers his doubts about Mr. Wilson's story. From the beginning of the story, readers do not have confidence that Holmes can solve the case.
