The students' rights did were violated. As they planned to perform it off-campus, it is none of the school's business. Therefore, the principal doesn't have the authority to reject the play or not to allow the students. So the students had their right to perform the kind of play they wanted because it wouldn't take place at school, it would be at a local recreation center.
