Read the excerpt from "A Modest Proposal." I profess, in the sincerity of my heart, that I have not the least personal interest
djverab [1.8K]

In this excerpt from Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal", the statement that best describes how irony is used in the excerpt is <em>"Swift states that he is speaking from "the sincerity in (his) heart."</em>

Swift is going to state his "modest proposal". He writes about how Ireland is suffering for being under British rule. How impoverished couples have trouble feeding their children. Mothers and children beg on the streets. To avoid this, Swift suggests in a satirical way that women should sell their children to rich English landowners, so they will serve them as meals.  He could not seriously write this from the sincerity of his heart, this is ironical.

I believe yes. Teenagers are people who have the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves. Although their decisions making is still developing in this time of their life, it is developed enough for teenagers to make decisions on their own.

Select the sentence that maintains parallelism.
BabaBlast [244]

The sentence that maintains parallelism is option D) “Gilb writes from his perspective as a Mexican-American, a parent, and a Southwesterner”. Parallel structures bring coherence to a text by using the same grammar pattern when listing things. In this example, the grammar structure that is used to reflect parallelism is a noun after the word “as” such “Mexican-American”, “a parent” and “a Southwesterner”. In the rest of the options there is a break in the grammar pattern since they do not follow the same structure as in option C) that starts by listing with nouns “Mexican-American” and “parent” but then it uses verb to be+ing and a prepositional phrase.

Parallel structures are useful writing resources since the reading experience for the reader is smoother and easier to understand.
