It was the Spanish who established the first permanent colony on the mainland what is now the United States and 1565, with the colony of St. Augustine. Although it should be noted that one of the first true successful colonies was Jamestown.
One of the biggest things that affected the colonies was the large amount of men living in the 13 colonies that decided to travel back to England in order to fight for Parliament. Some would stay though, and with further wars with more European nations the land size grew, and diversity/population growth was much more drastic as a result
