<u>In this passage, the author says they tried to look indifferent, </u><u>meaning that they tried to look as if they don’t care or think about the pear in question</u>. In the text before, they describe that they were hungry and that they wanted to get the pear very much. However, by stating that they “ straightened up then, and looked indifferent” when someone would pass by, they explain how they wanted to seem as they are not earning for the fruit, to seem <u>casual</u>, <u>relaxed</u>, and <u>uninterested </u>about it.
