He reveals to her that he wants to introduce the topic of the experiment to her home for a few months, and he explains the bet he made on Pickering. Mrs. Higgins is not happy about this unwanted visit of a typical flower girl, but she is not happy until the parlor-maid shows Mrs. and Miss Wynford Hill (first-scene mother and daughter).

Many Americans were initially reluctant to pursue independence from Britain due to:

A) Their longstanding relationship with this country- Britain had colonies in America for centuries. This was all the colonists had ever known. Before the outbreak of taxes deemed unfair by colonists, they actually had a somewhat good relationship.

B) Britain's military strength- Many American colonists felt comfortable with the idea of being part of the British empire, as during this time they were considered one of the strongest countries in the entire world.

Not everyone in the South operated with slaves as their labor force. There were also smaller family farms and such.  But those who did hold slaves in operating plantations held large numbers of slaves, and so the institution of slavery was a gigantic part of the Southern economy.
