It is only aimed to at giving the right type and amount of punishment to a crime. The more severe the crime, the more severe the punishment what Dante is illustrating when you look at the souls are being punished for their sins in Hell. In short, the punishment fits the crime.</span>

Answer:

1.) The dagger was meant to symbolize fate so yes it was an illusion of his mind beacuse of his guilty conscience.

2.) I would say it wasn't too drastic because they did suggest that he'd become king but he chose to listen to them and complete his fate.

3.) I would say thats a fair statement.

4.) His own desires to become king overcame his love for Duncan so much to the degree that he killed him.

5.) I think Macbeth killed Duncan on his own desires to become king and please his wife.
