Respecto a esto, ha sido planteada la hipótesis que la actual pandemia debería ser una consecuencia de la alteración antrópica (humana) de ecosistemas naturales de los murciélagos hospedadores con fines económicos, es decir, para ser vendidos como alimento, donde poblaciones de murciélagos habrían sido diezmadas, lo cual habría desencadenado el salto del virus hacia nuevos hospedadores como la especie humana. De este modo, los humanos se habrían convertido en "hospedadores naturales" del actual virus. Sin embargo, esta hipótesis hasta ahora es solamente una hipótesis y debe ser confirmada por evidencia científica. Otras hipótesis menos extendidas incluyen, por ejemplo, el uso de la biotecnología para crear virus en laboratorios o el calentamiento global como desencadenante de la destrucción de hábitats naturales de aquellos murciélagos que fueron los hospedadores primarios del virus.
