You will need to know the abbreviations of measurements because when pertaining to the real world, an you will see things as so "This fence is about 15ft tall." or "Jacobb is 72in tall."  If you do not understand the abbreviations you will not understand what anyone is ever talking about when it comes to measurements. As for knowing how to convert measures to be equivalent, that is important because some measurements are bigger than others. It doesn't make since to say 12 inches, when you can just say 1 foot.
