Exfoliation is a physical weathering process. It accompanies pressure release on a rock surface.

The part of the bedrock close to overhead rock receives more pressure while the part far away receives little to no pressure. This differential pressure is what leads to exfoliation of rocks. Exfoliation is produced when the overlying rock is moved away and the pressure is released.

When a rock exfoliates, it breaks down into layers like an onion skin. It can create a massive feature known as an exfoliation dome. Each sheet is a product of pressure differences.
