i think that their names help to contribute to the theme of tragedy/death. Angustias means anguish, Marttirio means martyrdom which is a s<u>ynonym for suffering, </u>and Magdalena is from the story of Mary magdalene weeping at the feet of jesus. All of those meanings don't seem like they would create a happy environment at all.
