1) A totalitarian leader tends to use propaganda campaigns spread by state-controlled mass media.

2) Totalitarianism is the most extreme kind of authoritarianism. In authoritarian governments, the state has a single power holder (individual dictator or political elite) that monopolizes political power. If not contested, provides society some degree of liberty. On the other hand, a totalitarian regime strives to control essentially all aspects of social life, like the economy, sciences, education, art, private matters, and social morals.  

3) The Economist has deemed China's social credit system as totalitarian because it is used to screen and classify its citizens according to their personal behavior.
