sert”? The Plains Indians had deserted the area, making the land available. The sandy soil was good for growing certain kinds of plants. Even though it was very dry, settlers wanted to raise cattle there. New inventions enabled farmers to use the soil more productively.

It was to avenge the South’s defeat during the Civil War.  Initially he planned to kidnap Lincoln as part of his plan but when war ended he then turned to assassinating the President.  He accomplished when the President was attending a play.  He was later hunted by authorities and killed.
