Answer:

The option which best states the author's overall purpose in this text is:

D. To inform the reader of a theory that attempts to explain why generations act the way they do.

Explanation:

I looked this question up and found out it concerns the text "What Past Generations Can Teach Us About Our Future," by former Newsweek correspondent Mike Kubic (born in 1927).

According to the article, Strauss & Howe developed a theory that explains and, in a way, even predicts how each generation will act. There are four "turnings" or stages which generations go through. According to Strauss & Howe's observations, these stages always happen in the same order: high, awakening, unraveling, and crisis. The generation belonging to each turning will always present certain traits and behaviors concerning their sense of community, individualism, economic prosperity, respect for institutions, etc.

<u>According to Kubic, this theory has been both praised and criticized, even though, so far, it has been able to successfully make predictions about the American society. However, it is important to note that Kubic does not praise or criticize it himself. All he does is describe and explain it. His purpose is to inform readers about the existence of the theory.</u>

Pay it forward summary chapter 14
Anettt [7]
Charles and Mary finally return from Lyme. They pay a visit to Anne and Lady Russell to report that Louisa is now able to sit up, although her head is still very weak. Mary says she really enjoyed her two-week stay in Lyme; she had gone to church, bathed, dined nightly, and taken numerous books from the library. Her time was not limited by any nursing to Louisa.

Anne asks how Captain Benwick is doing, and Charles merely laughs. He thinks Captain Benwick is romantically interested in his sister-in-law. He tells Anne how highly the Captain speaks of her. Mary disagrees; she does not think Captain Benwick worthy of, or interested in, her sister. Lady Russell is amused and declares that she must see Captain Benwick for herself before she can form an opinion of him. There is a rumor that Benwick will soon ride over to Kellynch to see Anne, but he does not come, and Lady Russell dismisses him as not worth her interest.

A theme of “The Village Blacksmith” is people can take charge of their fate.
nalin [4]

Considering the available options, the lines from the poem that best develop the theme "people can take charge of their fate" is the "<u>Toiling,—rejoicing,—sorrowing, / Onward through life he goes.”</u>

<h3>What is the theme of a poem?</h3>

The theme of a poem or play is the term used to describe the lesson about life or humanity that the poem conveys to readers.

In this case, the lines "<u>Toiling,—rejoicing,—sorrowing, / Onward through life he goes"</u> expressed the idea that whether one is toiling, rejoicing or in sorrowful mode, one would still have to continue living his life either to maintain the joyful moment, change the sorrow moment or continuing working for better days.

Hence, in this case, it is concluded that the correct answer is option A. "<u>Toiling,—rejoicing,—sorrowing, / Onward through life he goes.”</u>
