During the opening bars of the piece the lower string instruments are played by plucking the strings. The flute plays the main melody most of the time. More than an octave pitch range covers during the first part. A short and detached articulation is demonstrated during the first part. There is a major tonality during the first part. The trumpet plays the main melody most of the time in the second part. The melody is conjunct and contains narrow intervals during the second part. An ostinato accompanies the main melody during the second part. In the second part the tonality is minor.

Tchaikovsky then used tenuto, (in contrast to the staccato dynamic at the start), in which the notes are played to their full value. This piece ends in mezzo forte. Dance of the Reed Pipes also exhibits rubato or rhythmic flexibility.
