A good trick to have up your sleeve is to just memorize that the equation of a like is (y - y1) = m * (x - x1).

This equation describes a point that passes through (x1, y1) with a slope m. This point (x1, y1) does not have to be on the y-axis. Also, since the question told us they want m = slope = -1/4, all we have to do is plug stuff in.

(y - y1) = m * (x - x1) => (y - 4) = -1/4 * (x - 4), or answer D. Also note that the normal ‘x’ and ‘y’ here are variables. We can solve this equation for ‘y’ to give a more traditional format: y = -1/4x + 5.
