No podían ejercer ninguna acción legal: contratos, matrimonio o ser propietarios. La situación personal variaba en función del carácter y trato de sus propietarios. Muchos esclavos intentaron huir al Norte pero sus propietarios podían recuperar a los huidos; solamente en Canadá se podían sentir seguros.

El comercio de esclavos había sido abolido a principios del siglo XIX pero, de forma clandestina, el tráfico de seres humanos continuaba, ya que el Sur necesitaba un flujo constante de mano de obra esclava. El negocio era impresionante. El aumento constante de la demanda hizo que el valor de los esclavos se multiplicase. Se calcula que hacia 1860, un esclavo podía valer unos 2.000 dólares.

The main real skirmish of the Civil War was the First Battle if Bull Run. The Confederacy won which stunned Northerners and made them understand that the war could be long and troublesome.
