Employment Surveys Employment statistics in the US are often based on two nationwide monthly surveys: the Current Population Sur
vey (CPS) and the Current Employment Statistics (CES) survey. The CPS samples approximately 60,000 US households and collects the employment status, job type, and demographic information of each resident in the household. The CES survey samples 140,000 nonfarm businesses and government agencies and collects the number of payroll jobs, pay rates, and related information for each firm. Requried:
a. What is the population in the CPS survey?
b. What is the population in the CES survey?
For each of the following statistical questions, state whether the results from the CPS or CES survey would be more relevant
1. Do larger companies tend to have higher salaries.
2. What percentage of Americans are self-employed?
3. Are married men more or less likely to be employed than single mont?
Just Parts (c) were discussed because they were mentioned in the issue.
A subpart of (c):
In point (i)
The answer is 1 for the CES since only CES has salary and wage rates information.
In point (ii)
The answer is 2 for the CPS because only the CPS has job status information.
In point (iii)
The answer is 3 for the CPS as detailed in this issue, neither CES nor CPS explicitly states gender information. Even so, population studies generally include a 'gender' requirement.
A third point (18,20) may be added to the two given points to form a right triangle with sides 5 and 12. The distance, x, between the original two points is given by x^2 = 5^2 + 12^2
