California became an independent republic during the Mexican War.

Further Explanation:

The Mexican war also known as the Mexican American war has a very significant role in United States history. It was the first provincial expansion strategy of the United States that included California and New Mexico into its territories. It was the first general armament of U.S. Armies in a remote war on a foreign land involving extensive war preparations. We can also say that the war allowed the Federal forces of America their first armed combat experience in an overseas territory.

Treaty of Guadalupe ended “Mexican - American War” on 2nd February 1848. Treaty signed between them, compelled America to pay a reparation amount of 15 million dollars to Mexico and in return America got governance of “California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and half of New Mexico”. The citizens of these regions were given choices to either relocate to a new area or apply for American citizenship. One of the noteworthy positive aspects of the war was that it helped California to attain liberty and declare independence.

Answer:

During the Mexican-American War, California became a territory. Two years later, it became a state.

Explanation:

California was the name given to the northwestern part of the Spanish Empire in North America. The strategic position of the region raised British, French and Russian claims to its territory since the early nineteenth century. The strong immigration of settlers from the United States, also caused by the discovery of gold, triggered the Mexican-American War of 1846-48, following which the region was divided between Mexico and the United States. The Mexican part, Baja California, was later divided into the states of Baja California and Baja California Sur. The US side, Upper California, became the US State of California on September 9, 1850.
