Genes, the environment, and the organism

The net outcome of the reading of a gene is that a protein is made that generally has one of two basic functions, depending on the gene. First, the protein may be a structural protein, contributing to the physical properties of cells or organisms. Examples are microtubule, muscle, and hair proteins. Second, the protein may be an enzyme that catalyzes one of the chemical reactions of the cell. Therefore, by coding for proteins, genes determine two important facets of biological structure and function. However, genes cannot dictate the structure of an organism by themselves. The other crucial component in the formula is the environment. The environment influences gene action in many ways, about which we shall learn in subsequent chapters. In the present context, however, it is relevant to note that the environment provides the raw materials for the synthetic processes controlled by genes. For example, animals obtain several of the amino acids for their proteins as part of their diet. Most of the chemical syntheses in plant cells use carbon atoms taken from the air as carbon dioxide. Bacteria and fungi absorb from their surroundings many substances that are simply treated as carbon and nitrogen skeletons, and their enzymes convert these components into the compounds that constitute the living cell. Thus, through genes, an organism builds the orderly process that we call life out of disorderly environmental materials

Sensory receptor cells convert a stimulus, such as an odor molecule or light, into an electrical signal that is conveyed to the
swat32

Answer:

Sensory transduction.

Explanation:

Sensory transduction may be defined as the process by which sensory stimulus are transformed in the body. The receptor cell is mainly involved in the sensory transduction process.

The sensory receptor cell like a light or an odor is converted into the electrical signal by the process of signal transduction. The information is then conveyed to the nervous system in the form of electrical signals.

Thus, the correct answer is signal transduction.

The potato placed in vinegar produced _________.
anastassius [24]

Answer:

Most living tissue contains catalase. We can use potatoes to help see catalase work because bubbles of oxygen form when we put potatoes into hydrogen peroxide.

Explanation:

As catalase decomposes hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas, bubbles of oxygen collect on the disk. When the density of the combined paper/enzyme/O2 is less than the solution the disc will rise to the surface.

What proteins are crucial for creating and maintaining DNA replication forks? Choose the best explanation.
timurjin [86]

Answer:

Explanation:

The correct answer is (B) Helicase creates the replication fork; single-strand binding proteins keep the single strands from reuniting. The replication fork is established by the enzyme DNA helicase, which separates the two complementary strands of a DNA molecule
