The narrator tells his point of view. He at one point thinks of smothering Doodle because he is angry that Doodle isn't "normal". His dad is just as pessimistic and doesn't think he'll make it through the season. After doodle does make it through, the narrator starts to change and take care of him. He teaches Doodle to walk, run and swim. One night, there's a storm and a bird is blown onto the porch. It's a Scarlet Ibis. The bird is hurt and stuggles to stay alive and move. Eventually, it dies within minutes, so Doodle and the narrator bury the bird. The narrator thinks of the bird as doodle. ina constant fight for his life.
