A dialect is different from an individual speech pattern because a dialect is a variety of speech that belongs to a particular <u>group</u> of people while an individual speech pattern is the way a <u>person</u> uses language in a uniquely personal way, this is actually called <em>idiolect.</em>

I'll explain a little bit more of the characteristics of each one, so their differences can become clearer:

I'll explain a little bit more of the characteristics of each one, so their differences can become clearer:

  • Dialect: A dialect is a variety of language that is appropriated by a particular region or social group, some differences that it can have from other dialects are pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary. Within a language there can be many dialects, as you may have noticed whenever you travel to another part of the country (or state) or maybe even on tv or the internet; English is the language but dialects are many.
  • Idiolect (individual speech pattern): The way we speak is another aspect of our personalities in which we are completely unique and different. If you think about it, no person speaks exactly the same as another, we always have preferences for certain words over others, for certain registers (sophisticated vs simple) or even for certain rhythms while speaking! Idiolect is so special that not only varies from person to person, but also one individual can present different idiolects at different moments of his or her life.

As we can conclude, both dialect and idiolect focus on particularities in language, <u>but the main difference between each is that dialect is shared by a social group or region while idiolect or individual speech pattern is exclusive to an individual.</u>

Which type of figurative language is used to describe ichabod crane’s person?
tigry1 [53]

Answer:

None of the alternatives are correct.

Explanation:

Ichabod Crane is in fact described using figurative language, but the figures of speech used are the metaphor and the simile, as can be seen in the excerpt below:

"hands that dangled a mile out of his sleeves... feet that might have served for shovels... his head... looked like a weathercock perched on his shoulders."

The metaphor is the figure of speech that presents an implicit and subjective comparison between two elements that have something in common, while the simile is the figure of language that presents an explicit comparison between two elements that do not have similarities, but that can develop a new meaning when compared.

Ichabod Crane is the main character of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," a story about a village that is haunted by a headless knight who decapitates those he encounters.

STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING-
Norma-Jean [14]

Answer:

A. He still has a great distance left to travel.

Explanation:

Robert Frost's poem "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening" seems to talk of an unnamed traveler going through the woods on a snowy evening. And the speaker also reveals how he could not stay longer among the woods for he needs to move on.

On the surface, the poem seems like a simple poem that describes what the traveler/ speaker sees while going through the woods. And even though he'd like to stay longer and revel in the snowy scene, he couldn't. He reveals that he <em>"had promises to keep and miles to go before [he] sleep[s]"</em>. The "<em>miles</em>" could mean the distance he still needs to go. It could also mean 'life' that a person has to live before one 'sleep' forever.

Thus, the inference about the speaker's journey that best supports the poem is option A.
