14.4 inches ( to 1 decimal place)

the rise and tread are at right angles to each other and the slope is the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed

using Pythagoras' identity

slope = √(8² + 12²) = √(64 + 144) = √208 = 14.4 ( to 1 dec. place)

Using the formula for m=slope=ystep/xstep the slope of your staircase is 8/12= 2/3 and hence 66.6% slope

Twice the sum of a number and 77 is equal to three times the difference of the number and 6.  Find the number
tino4ka555 [31]

x + 77 = 3(x - 6)

x + 77 = 3x - 18

x + 77 + 18 = 3x - 18 + 18

x + 95 = 3x

x + 95 - x = 3x - x

95 = 2x

x = 95/2

x = 47.5

Find the limit............
liubo4ka [24]

Answer: -\frac{9}{x^2}

====================================================

Work Shown:

\displaystyle \lim_{\Delta x \to 0^{+}} \frac{\frac{9}{x+\Delta x} - \frac{9}{x}}{\Delta x}\\\\\\\displaystyle \lim_{\Delta x \to 0^{+}} \frac{\frac{9x}{x(x+\Delta x)} - \frac{9(x+\Delta x)}{x(x+\Delta x)}}{\Delta x}\\\\\\\displaystyle \lim_{\Delta x \to 0^{+}} \frac{\frac{9x-9(x+\Delta x)}{x(x+\Delta x)}}{\Delta x}\\\\\\\displaystyle \lim_{\Delta x \to 0^{+}} \frac{9x-9x-9\Delta x}{x\Delta x(x+\Delta x)}\\\\\\

\displaystyle \lim_{\Delta x \to 0^{+}} \frac{-9\Delta x}{x\Delta x(x+\Delta x)}\\\\\\\displaystyle \lim_{\Delta x \to 0^{+}} \frac{-9}{x(x+\Delta x)}\\\\\\\displaystyle \frac{-9}{x(x+0)}\\\\\\\displaystyle -\frac{9}{x^2}\\\\\\

The trick here is to first simplify the expression so that the \Delta x term in the very lower denominator cancels out. This is to avoid dividing by zero. Once this division by zero error is avoided, we can replace the delta x term with 0 and evaluate the limit as \Delta x approaches 0 from the right or positive direction.

Which equation represents a parabola that has a focus of (0 0) and a directrix of y = 2
mel-nik [20]

ANSWER

x ^{2}  =  - 4(y - 1).

EXPLANATION

Since the parabola has the (0, 0) and the directrix at y=2.

The equation is of the form

{(x - h)}^{2}  =  - 4p(y - k)

where (h,k) is the vertex.

The vertex is half way between the directrix and the focus.

The vertex will be at (0,1)

and is the distance from the vertex to the focus which is 1.

{(x - 0)}^{2}  =  - 4(1)(y - 1)

x ^{2}  =  - 4(y - 1)
