1. It limits the routes taken to more than half, from about 13,000 miles to 5,200 miles, during shipping supplies of products either from east coast to west coast or to the horn south America.

2. It helps the United States to have an advantage in Navy operations during the attack. It gives the US a shorter time or routes to send reinforcement.

The reason the US was in a far better position than any other country to build one because they have the financial means and expertise to build the project. Also, they have weapons to trade with Panama to fight Colombia and are closer to the routes. Mexico or Colombia does not have the financial means or expertise to pursue the project.
