In cold climates, water freezes and expands as a result, breaking rocks with sheer force. The smaller rocks or sediments are washed away by erosion.

During the warm wet season, rocks expand and contract. As a result, the rocks are weakened and eventually fracture.

Note that the rate of weathering depends on the types of rock and temperature change. Rocks in tropical climates experience the highest rate of weathering because of the combination of high heat and heavy rainfall.
