Layers of strata in the earths crust naturally slide along each other. Sometimes friction or blockage causes this process to stop, until enough pressure builds up to overcome whatever the resistant force is. The water would seep into the joints of the igneous rock as it is well-jointed,and carry out chemical weathering.
The materials such as feldspar and mica are nit weather-resistance hence easily loosen after weathering take place,causing the fragments to fall off.
