Read the passage from Animal Farm. About this time there occurred a strange incident which hardly anyone was able to understand.

One night at about twelve o'clock there was a loud crash in the yard, and the animals rushed out of their stalls. It was a moonlit night. At the foot of the end wall of the big barn, where the Seven Commandments were written, there lay a ladder broken in two pieces. Squealer, temporarily stunned, was sprawling beside it, and near at hand there lay a lantern, a paint-brush, and an overturned pot of white paint. The dogs immediately made a ring round Squealer, and escorted him back to the farmhouse as soon as he was able to walk. None of the animals could form any idea as to what this meant, except old Benjamin, who nodded his muzzle with a knowing air, and seemed to understand, but would say nothing. Which statement best summarizes the theme of this passage? It is important to update the rules every so often to keep up with changing times. It is important not to speak out against those in charge; otherwise, you risk consequences. Some cannot recognize that they are being oppressed and lied to, even when faced with it firsthand. Unusual incidents that happen at night are best left to be solved by the elders in the community.

Answer:

The statement which best summarizes the theme of the passage is:

C. Some cannot recognize that they are being oppressed and lied to, even when faced with it firsthand.

Explanation:

Animal Farm is an allegorical novella by author George Orwell in which the oppressive Soviet regime in Russia is criticized.

After their revolution, the animals are trying their best to create an equal and just society. However, the pigs in charge change their perspectives once they taste power. Napoleon, more specifically, begins to lie and deceive the other animals, forcing them to work harder than they used to when they worked under Jones.

One way Napoleon has found to lie is by changing the commandments painted on the wall of the barn. In the passage we are analyzing here, the animals are witnessing a sprawling Squealer (the pig in charge of false propaganda) beside some paint and a brush. Still, the animals do not understand the scene unfolding before their eyes. That means they will keep on being lied to. Since they cannot understand how they are being manipulated, oppression is a certainty.

Naddika [18.5K]
Based on the given excerpt above, I can say that the what the carp represents here are DEATH and INNOCENCE. Death here refers to how the twenty-pound carp was being treated and innocence refers to the teachers and boarding students who tasted the carp. This excerpt is actually from Yun Wang's "The Carp" and this lyric poem reflects his bad experiences from his father, such as imprisonment and torture.
