The character in question is the alcoholic choirmaster, Simon Stimson, who took his own life in his attic by hanging himself.
Mr Stimson is a troubled character and in Act III of his play, gives a speech where he says that humans merely exist in ignorance and are led by blindness and their own self-centred passion.
