Explanation:

The Standard of Ur, a wooden sign with inlaid figures, was discovered in the excavations of the royal cemetery of Ur, an ancient city in southern Iraq. The original function of this object dated 2600 BC is still unknown. It is part of a precious archaeological find belonging to the Sumerians, who formed the first civilization of Mesopotamia.

The Standard of Ur was found beside the skeleton of a sacrificed man who may have been his bearer. For this reason, it was interpreted by archaeologist Leonard Wooley as a flag that would be conducted in a procession, giving rise to its popular name. Subsequent investigations, however, failed to confirm whether it was, in fact, a standard.
