This movement started in 1930, when immigration to the USA became very high. At that time, nativists saw immigrants as threats to culture and good customs adopted by American society. In addition, nativists blamed immigrants for taking jobs that were supposed to be for Americans, as well as occupying homes and public services that were meant for Americans.

The first group to fall victim to this racist movement were Hispanic immigrants.
