This artistic movement was created in Italy in 1909 by poet Filippo Tomasso Marinetti. He published the Manifesto of Futurism on the front page of Le Figaro, a relevant Paris newspaper.
In the manifesto, he proclaimed the beauty of speed. He even said that the speed of a racing car is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace.
The main characteristics of Futurism were:
- Criticism of past works of art as "oppressive".
- Celebration of modern marvels of industry and technology.
- Expression of dynamism, movement, speed.
