The crucial word here is "like" - it means that the letters are "like" - compared to the knight. A direct comparison such as this one is a Simile - this is the correct answer.

A metaphor is similar to a simile in that it treats something as if it was another thing, but it does not include a direct  comparison.

C]

The anger comes from the misplaced objectives of both North and South. No party, according to this speech, was willing enough to see peace as a worthwhile alternative to a war that was inevitable given what each thought. This thought comes at the end of paragraph 2.

The history of the Bible's response to this kind of thing is put there to shift a proper religious interpretation of what the war actually meant, and what prayer actually accomplished, and how a loving God would respond to such prayer.

The shift is absolutely concluded right at the beginning of the next paragraph, It, in fact, begs the nation to seek healing. Lincoln hopes that the war will be put away quickly and the union will once again be one.

Read the question and answer the question that follows:
Igoryamba

"There is NOTHING MORE DISTRESSING to every good patriot, to every good American, than the hard, scoffing spirit which treats the ALLEGATION of dishonesty in a public man as a cause for laughter. " - really good line imo

My best guess would be answer C.

My reasoning is the words used and the meaning behind them, without the need  of being emboldened " nothing more distressing " is a powerful a way you can distinguish something to be distressing. The speaker/author is speaking powerfully; anent? I believe the speaker is having issues with how indifferent the public is reacting when a person of government has been dishonest (or when a person of government is accused of being dishonest). He says in fact that the "scoffing spirit" among people that take these allegations lightly, is to him, the most distressing event.

Therefore my best guess would be that this speaker is speaking with criticism towards those willing to hear.
