Answer:

The dissociative thesis states that social mobility is a disruptive and detrimental experience for the individual. Despite the absence of convincing evidence either for or against it, this thesis is generally accepted in sociology. I investigate this thesis by considering three dimensions of dissociation—i.e., social isolation, utilitarian individualism, and social disorientation. I use data from a large-scale survey in Flanders (Belgium) and apply Diagonal Reference Models to study the consequences of intergenerational social mobility. I find support for asymmetric acculturation for each dimension, i.e., upwardly mobile individuals adapt more to the new social status position, compared to downwardly mobile individuals. Moreover, both for social disorientation and utilitarian individualism, I find detrimental effects of the experience of downward social mobility. As I find no detrimental consequences of both upward and downward mobility, the results do not provide evidence for the dissociative thesis.

Read this excerpt from “ A Visit from the Goon Squad.”
serious [3.7K]

Answer:Alex registers the chaotic energy of the crowd and fears for the safety of his family.

Explanation:

In this excerpt, Alex is not experiencing a flashback because the extract states "as if it had already happened", showing it has not already happened. The best answer is 'Alex recognises the significance of the moment and wants to share it with his family'. His handset is not malfunctioning, because he has "no trouble locating his wife's handset", and the description of the crowd does not lead the reader to believe there is a chaotic energy.

While Americans greet each other with a handshake or hug, Japanese people usually nod or bow

Explanation:

Americans often greet each other with a handshake, kiss on the cheek, or hug.

But in Japan, people greet each other by bowing or giving a simple nod. Traditionally, there are four different types of bowing, according to Slate. Each represents a different emotion, such as gratitude, remorsefulness, and respect. Generally speaking, the deeper the bow, the more gratitude or appreciation you are showing.
