A student wishing to attend a university or other academic institution in the United States must apply for a student visa (F-1). Those who wish to attend a professional or non-academic institution must apply for the non-academic visa (M-1). People who have a tourism visa (B-2) or people who travel to the United States using the Visa Waiver Program can not study full-time courses. A tourist visa can only be used to attend short courses that do not offer academic or professional credit, such as a short English course, for example.
