<em>It causes erosion because the water particles are moving over a substance, which pulls away microscopic (and sometimes large) particles of that same substance. When a wave crashes into land or any substance, the particles on the outside of that same substance become loose, and in turn the wave takes the particles away from it and goes wherever the water goes.</em>
