Topic Discussion

I always get "The Primary Purpose of this passage is to?" wrong on Reading Comp. I'm guessing this is hurting my score as it seems like a simple questions and I always get it wrong.

Any idea on how to nail this??? I started taking notes during the section and it helps. I know what the passage is about, but trying to stick it into one of those GMAT choices is difficult. Suggestions?

Main Idea/Primary Purpose Questions:
Many people believe there is no difference between the main or central idea of the passage and the primary purpose of the author of the passage. This is simply not true. Let's take a look at the subtle but important difference between them:
Main Idea
The question might look something like this:

"Which of the following best states the central idea of the passage?"
"Which of the following most accurately states the main idea of the passage?"
"Which of the following is the principal topic of the passage?"
"The main topic of the passage is...."

Primary Purpose
The question might look like this:

"The primary purpose of this passage is to..."
"The primary purpose of the passage as a whole is to..."
"The primary focus of this passage is on which of the following?"
"The main concern of the passage is to..."
"In the passage, the author is primarily interested in...."
"The passage is chiefly concerned with..."

Add a comma or an exclamation point to the following sentences to set apart the interjection. No _____ I will not give in to you
LUCKY_DIMON [66]

Answer:

No, I will not give in to your temper tantrum! No, I don't believe we have received your letter yet. Well, maybe she can get a ride with someone else. Oh! You startled me! So, when would you like to eat dinner?

Explanation:

The commas(,) are employed in a sentence primarily yo mark a pause or to separate the introductory part of the sentence from the rest of the sentence while an exclamation mark(!) is used to express the emotions of excitement, surprise, or any such strong feeling or emotions. As per this definition, the given blanks are filled accordingly. Since the sentence beginning with 'oh' denotes a strong emotion of surprise, it will employ the exclamation mark(!), the other sentences just mark a pause after the introductory word 'yes', 'no', or 'well' and thus, they will use comma(,).

In "No Gumption," when Russell's sister says things like "You shouldn't waste money" and "You shouldn't eat before dinner," what
gayaneshka [121]

Answer: A. Russell's sister takes after their mother, but he does not.

In the story, there is no implication of Russell not being obedient. He is so obedient he performs the job he hates everyday because his mother tells him to do so. There is also no sign of Russell's sister wanting to become a writer.

The author mentions that he has learned all of his mother's maxims as well, so that is not a difference between them. The difference is that his sister feels compelled to say them, and means them, because they align with what she thinks. This is because the sister is more similar to their mother than Russell.
