The coach is compared to a volcano because he is angry. Using context clues, we can conclude that the coach feels some sort of emotion when his team is late. Considering it would be bad to be late, it also suggests he is mad.

Volcanoes steam, and this could be related to the terms: hotheaded, angry, etc. or to the saying "blowing off steam" which refers to someone who got really mad and is trying to calm down.

From all of this, we can conclude that the coach is angry his team was late.
