The massive oil sands in Alberta are a tremendously profitable industrial operation. Oil harvested from them ends up around the world, but especially in the United States. However, the processing of it takes much water, especially that involving the Athabasca River. Many environmental groups are concerned about the increasing water pollution of the Athabasca and of the groundwater supply.
