Composite volcanoes are explosive, towering giants. Shield volcanoes quietly produce broad, massive structures through lava flows. Cinder cone volcanoes are the smallest and simplest, but still pack a volcanic punch. A caldera is a large depression formed when a volcano erupts and collapses. Lava plateaus are extensive areas of flood basalt which are formed by the extensive eruption of basaltic lava over a large area.
