The Presidency became more powerful than the other departments of government because of the three leaders, George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. While the executive branch has always had sway now, Congress held sway throughout the 1800s. It is true that the president's influence has diminished, but the balance of power has remained stable up until now. As a result, today's government branches are all pushing for equal influence.
