The ions of the solar wind collide with atoms of oxygen and nitrogen from the Earth's atmosphere in the ionosphere. The energy emitted during these collisions creates an aurora, which is a colorful glowing halo around the poles. When the solar wind is the strongest, the auroras are the most active.
