Area of a given figure is a 2 dimensional measurement which describes the amount of space occupied by the figure, while volume of the figure describes its capacity in a 3 dimensional measurement.
The surface area of a triangular prism is the sum of the areas of all its surfaces. Since the surface area considers the areas of the figure not volume, therefore the surface area of the triangular prism is measured in square units not cubic units.
