When a person is sleep deprived, they can have trouble functioning. This affects someone's alertness, causing them to be prone to making mistakes and to have difficulty paying attention. Sleep deprivation can also cause problems with emotions and mood by increasing stress and irritability  and even causing depression. It can even cause physical problems such as weight gain and decreased immune system.
