Siglos antes de la llegada de los españoles, en el continente americano hacían vida, grandes pueblos indígenas, muy civilizados y de culturas intermedias. Entre estas culturas de la época precolombina sobresalieron tres por su legado literario, los mayas en Guatemala y Yucatán, los aztecas en México, y los incas en Perú, y su legado no es solo literario, también fueron artistas admirables en (templos, palacios, cerámicas, tejido, esculturas, pinturas, orfebrería y tallas en madera).  Se asume que esta literatura de desarrollo en paralelo a la evolución de estas grandes civilizaciones y era de carácter eminentemente oral.

Centuries before the arrival of the Spaniards, great indigenous peoples, highly civilized and of intermediate cultures, made life on the American continent. Among these cultures of the pre-Columbian era, three stood out for their literary legacy, the Mayans in Guatemala and Yucatán, the Aztecs in Mexico, and the Incas in Peru, and their legacy is not only literary, they were also admirable artists in (temples, palaces, ceramics, weaving, sculptures, paintings, goldsmithing and wood carvings). It is assumed that this literature developed in parallel with the evolution of these great civilizations and was eminently oral in character.
