1) subtract from both sides

y - 5 = (x - 4) {}^{2}

2) divide both sides by -2

-  \frac{y - 5}{5}  = (x - 4) {}^{2}

(1)take the square root of both sides

\sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }  = x - 4

(2) simplify

\sqrt{  - \frac{y - 5}{2 +} }  +  \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }

\sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{1} }  = x - 4

5) regroup terms

\sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }  = x - 4

6) switch sides

x - 4 =  \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }

7) break down the problem into these 2 equations

x - 4 =  \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }

8) solve the 1st equation

x  = 4 - 2 \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }

(1) add 4 to both sides

x =  \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }  + 4

(2) regroup terms

x = 4 + 2 \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }

9) solve the 2nd equation

x  - 4 =  - 2 \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }

(1) add 4 to both sides

x =  - 2 \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} } + 4

(2) regroup terms

x = 4 -  \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }

10) collect all solutions

x = 4 +  \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }4 -  \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }

that's your answer!

x = 4 +  \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} } 4 -  \sqrt{ \frac{y - 5}{2} }

I hope it understand you
